The issue for me is that the author seems to have only one or two plot devices in her toolbox. Or, I guess may said differently, there are a lot of fantasy novels out there and a lot of them are better than this, so why read this one? But I read it, and I'm not worse off for having done so. Part Lord of the Rings (with it's epic quest and bumbling, doofy anti-hero main character) part Norse folk novel, it just seems kinda amateurish to me. I would go so far as to say I don't know what this book is trying to be. Second, this isn't a bad book, it just wasn't for me, nor is this particular style of fantasy fiction really my bag. I'd never heard of the author or (apparently) series it belongs to and based on this book, would not seek out the author or other titles in this series. Okay, disclaimer first - I got this book in a ten-book grab bag of sci-fi/fantasy novels from a used book store for five dollars.

I wish I had this book years ago when I inherited my grandmother's archive. Best of all, she provides workflows and checklists that help you break down a massive project into manageable parts. Her resource sections are well-documented. She then proceeds to describe how to evaluate, catalog, organize, preserve and manage that archive with common sense tasks and affordable tools. She, very correctly, defines this collection as an archive and by doing so defines it as a valuable resource that deserves proper attention. The book begins where many of us got started - what to do with grandma's trunk full of photos, letters and papers. She uses her own experience to demonstrate archival issues then offers easy-to understand solutions. For family historians and genealogists, this is an essential guide for organizing and managing the family archive. In How to Archive Family Keepsakes, Denise Levenick has created an amazing reference for anyone who has inherited a collection of family letters, documents and personal items. And a lot of that is based on the language. Okay, after writing all that out, I feel fine with the 3-star rating. As much as I loved her in McKay’s other books, The Headmistress and The Delicate Things We Make, she takes this one to another level, full of nuance and texture. If I ever decide to read it again, it’ll definitely be an eyeball book. I get that she’s written with a deep, sultry sort of voice but 10 hours of it was just too much. But her choice for the headmistress grated on me after only an hour or so. I nearly forgot about the narration! Abby Craden had a lot of voices to handle in this book and I could listen to Sam all day long. The Headmistress By: Milena McKay Narrated by: Abby Craden Length: 10 hrs and 25 mins 4.9 (135 ratings) Try for £0. I mean, we’re talking a couple of decades of knowledge and experiences gone without a clue on some things. Without getting into spoiler territory, I just didn’t buy all of the various conflicts, motivations, Sam’s knowledge and/or ability to figure things out, and M’s inability to figure things out. The MCs were honest with each other and communicated like grown-ups. : The Headmistress (Audible Audio Edition): Milena McKay, Abby Craden, Tantor Audio: Books Skip to main. Words can be beautiful and McKay definitely had it going on in this area. It was lovely to hear language beyond a basic level. I’ll try to flesh out my opinion a bit more…Ī more advanced vocabulary. There were good things and not as good things for me. I’m pretty torn on the rating for this one. |
